For the project of the new international portal, Qbr chooses stability, flexibility, and safety provided by Linux, but mostly it relies on the expertise of Antonio Calabrese, Linux System Manager for Qbr.it, who says: “The greatest and most renowned web projects use Linux, such as Wikipedia, Dmoz and Google.”
Antonio Calabrese, in addition to being highly competent in Linux systems, boasts a long career in the management of complex infrastructures and high traffic portals. After obtaining the Cisco CCNA certificate, he worked in the Unix and Linux servers management and mostly in web environment for eight years. He is currently the Linux/Unix advisor for prestigious companies such as Enel S.p.a.
Linux is the kernel designed by Linus Torvalds in 1991, when its creator was still a young student. In 1996 Tux, the popular penguin (drawn by Larry Erwing) became its official logo. Today Linux is the preferred operating system of thousands of programmers around the world, that work with production environment. It recently became popular in desktop environment as well.
The importance and success of Linux is largely due to its freedom and to it being a product of cooperation: Linux is independent from market regulations; it is a free operating system, and subject to continuous improvements suggested by external contributions from its users.
Qbr is currently one of the most popular social networks in Italy with more than 300.000 registered users. It was created in 2003 and in 2004 was run by Nascar (Neapolitan Communication Company, a leader in visual identity projects, online communication and web-marketing). Between 2004 and today, Qbr expanded and improved. The year 2007, will be particularly, busy with innovations, such as the application of RUR (Real User Rank, the algorithm that detects fake users) to Chat lines , and the creation of an online magazine for information and entertainment of community users.
The success of Qbr, is testified by the continuous increase in its registered users, due to its free access policy, and a package of free services offered to its users.
Fabio Cecaro, Qbr’s Mysql System Manager, stated: “Linux is an operating system of Unix derivation, a system with a long history of working on projects at enterprise level and Qbr has chosen it for various reasons. When designing with open source technologies (php, apache, zend, framework, mysql server) it becomes almost automatic, to choose the Linux platform, since it receives these technologies with remarkable performance, allowing uncomplicated infrastructure upgrading..”
“A LAMP development environment is at its best performance and stability on the Linux platform and it is practically a must to switch to this type of architecture” says Antonio Calabrese, and he continues: “LAMP is an acronym for Linux Apache Mysql Php and it refers to an impartial and free of charge environment, for web-applications that will be the core of a new international version of Qbr. Apache, from “Apache Software Foundation”, is the hub in LAMP environment. It is free software and according to Netcraft, it is the mostly widely used http server. He also adds “Compared to the actual solution based on Windows 2003 Server, Linux grants high performances, stability and high scalability, furthermore, Load Balancing and Clustering solutions granted by Apache will make us reach standards of reliability and efficiency never seen before, but necessary for an ambitious project such as ours”.
